Replacing EAN labels with QR codes – From barcode to GS1 Digital Link

Replacing EAN Labels with QR Codes – How to Successfully Make the Switch

The classic EAN-13 barcode has served retail reliably for decades – but the future belongs to QR codes with GS1 Digital Link. With the GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative, checkout systems worldwide must be able to read 2D codes by the end of 2027. This guide shows you how to successfully replace your EAN labels with QR codes – step by step.

Why EAN Is Being Replaced

The EAN-13 barcode stores exactly one piece of information: the 13-digit GTIN. That was sufficient for decades, but modern supply chains require more – batch numbers, best-before dates, serial numbers and product information for consumers. A QR code with GS1 Digital Link combines all of this in a single code.

ZOUC Ready Steps for the Switch
STEP 1

Keep Your GTIN

Your existing 13-digit GTIN remains the basis. Instead of the EAN-13 barcode, it is now embedded in a GS1 Digital Link URL, e.g.: https://id.gs1.org/01/04012345678905

STEP 2

Generate QR Code

Use a GS1-certified generator that creates the URL structure in the correct GS1 Digital Link format. The QR code must have at least error correction level M.

STEP 3

Adapt Print Template

Replace the EAN-13 barcode area on your packaging with the QR code. Minimum size: 15 × 15 mm. During the transition phase, both codes should ideally appear on the packaging.

STEP 4

Order Labels

Order your new EAN/GTIN labels from barcodeetiketten.com – available with EAN barcode, QR code or dual labeling on roll.

Dual Labeling: The Safe Transition

During the transition phase until end of 2027, dual labeling is recommended: EAN-13 barcode and QR code on the same packaging. This ensures that your products can be scanned at all checkout systems – whether they already support 2D codes or not.

Advantages of the Switch

The migration from EAN to QR code offers substantial advantages. A QR code contains not only the GTIN but also batch numbers, best-before dates and serial numbers – all in a single code. Recalls and allergen information can be traced down to individual batches. And the consumer can scan the code with their smartphone and receive product information, origin proofs or sustainability data directly.
