<strong>PZN</strong> number – <strong>Pharmaceutical Central Number</strong> explained

PZN number: What is a Pharmaceutical Central Number?

The PZN number (Pharmaceutical Central Number) is a unique identification number used in Germany for medicines, medical devices and other standard pharmacy products. Each PZN consists of 8 digits and is issued by IFA GmbH. Pharmacies use the PZN for ordering, invoicing and stock management.

Structure of the PZN number

A PZN consists of 8 digits: 7-digit item number + 1 check digit. The numbers are issued centrally by IFA GmbH (Information Centre for Pharmaceutical Specialities). Each pack size and dosage form of a medicine is assigned its own PZN.

Where can I find the PZN number?

The PZN is printed on every medicine pack, usually near the barcode. It is marked with the abbreviation “PZN” or “PZN-”. You can search for medicines by their PZN in online pharmacies and the ABDATA database.

Printing PZN labels

For manufacturers of medical devices and dietary supplements, we print PZN labels with barcodes to pharmacy-grade standards. The PZN barcode is based on the Code 39 standard and is recognised by all pharmacy scanners.

How much does a PZN number cost?

The PZN is issued by IFA GmbH. The fee is approximately €75 per item. An annual maintenance fee also applies.

Do I need a PZN for dietary supplements?

If your product is sold through pharmacies, yes. For sales outside pharmacies (e.g. chemists, online shops), an EAN/GTIN is more common.

How do I find the PZN for a medicine?

The PZN is printed on the packaging next to the barcode. Online, you can search for the PZN in the ABDATA database or on platforms such as medizinfuchs.de.
