EAN number: Everything you need to know about EAN codes, GTINs, barcodes
The EAN number (European Article Number) – colloquially also known as a barcode – is a globally unique product code, now officially referred to as a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number). Every product in retail requires an EAN number so that it can be scanned at the till and managed in the inventory management system. Whether for Amazon, eBay or high street retailers – nothing works without an EAN/GTIN.
What is an EAN number?
An EAN number is an 8- or 13-digit sequence printed as a barcode on product packaging. The EAN-13 is the standard for retail products, whilst the EAN-8 is used for small packages. The number consists of: a country prefix (e.g. 400–440 for Germany), a company number, an item number and a check digit.
EAN, GTIN, UPC – what is the difference?
EAN is the European standard, UPC (Universal Product Code) the American one. Since 2009, both have been grouped under the umbrella term GTIN. All three designations are relevant for international trade – the barcodes are compatible.
Where can I get an EAN number?
EAN/GTIN numbers are issued by GS1. In Germany, GS1 Germany is responsible. As a business, you apply for a number range and can then assign your own product numbers. For Amazon sellers, there is also the FNSKU as an alternative identifier in the FBA programme.

How much does an EAN number cost?
The cost of EAN numbers depends on the GS1 membership fee. The annual fee at GS1 Germany starts at around €150 for small businesses. This gives you a number range for up to 1,000 items.
Can I generate EAN numbers myself?
No, valid EAN/GTIN numbers can only be obtained through GS1. Self-generated numbers are not accepted by retail partners and marketplaces.
Do I need an EAN number for Amazon?
Yes, Amazon requires an EAN/GTIN for most product categories. Alternatively, you can apply for a GTIN exemption or use FNSKU labels in the FBA programme.
What is the difference between EAN and GTIN?
EAN is the European designation, GTIN the international umbrella term. Since 2009, the EAN has officially been called GTIN. In practice, both terms are used interchangeably.
Is a barcode the same as an EAN?
A barcode is the umbrella term for machine-readable codes consisting of light and dark bars. The EAN number is a specific type of barcode (EAN-8 or EAN-13) for retail products. Every EAN number is therefore a barcode, but not every barcode is an EAN.
