Cable marking in electrical engineering
Control cabinets, server rooms and industrial facilities often contain hundreds of cables and wires. Without systematic labelling, any maintenance, troubleshooting or expansion becomes a time-consuming task. Standard-compliant cable labelling saves time, prevents errors and is even mandatory in many sectors.
Why label cables?
- Quick troubleshooting: Identify the correct cable immediately in the event of a fault, rather than spending minutes tracing wires
- Simplify maintenance: Technicians can quickly find their way around using the labelling
- Compliance with standards: DIN EN 62491 and DIN EN 60204-1 require labelling in electrical installations
- Documentation: The marking on the cable matches the circuit diagram – no guesswork
Methods of cable marking
There are various approaches to cable marking:
- Wrap-around labels (self-laminating): The label is wrapped around the cable and overlaps itself. Very durable and ideal for round cables
- Flag labels: The label is placed around the cable like a small flag and stuck to itself. The text is legible from both sides
- Cable ties with labelling field: Combines fastening and labelling in one
- Barcode labels on terminal blocks: Attached to the terminal block rather than directly to the cable – ideal for control cabinets
Standards and regulations
The most important standards for cable marking:
- DIN EN 62491: Describes the marking of conductors and cables in industrial installations
- DIN EN 60204-1: Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment. Requires clear identification of all conductors
- DIN VDE 0100: Installation of low-voltage systems – requires marking for the identification of conductors
The right material for cable marking
Cable labels must be particularly durable, as they are often exposed to heat, moisture and mechanical stress. The following is recommended:
- Flexible polyester or polyethylene film that adapts to the cable radius
- Temperature-resistant (up to 150°C depending on the application)
- Resistant to oils, solvents and UV radiation
