The PZN
The PZN (Pharmazentralnummer) is a Germany-wide standard for pharmacies, pharmaceutical wholesalers and pharmaceutical manufacturers and was introduced for the unique identification of medicines and pharmacy products. For this purpose, each product is given an eight-digit numerical code by the IFA (Informationsstelle für Arzneispezialitäten); different pack sizes or variants (drops, tablets, etc.) and dosages of a medicine are also given an individual PZN to prevent confusion.
Coding
The prefix "PZN-" is shown in plain text below the barcode, in the barcode only the number itself is coded with code 39 without a check digit, both are then applied to each packaging unit of the medication.
