Inspection labels in accordance with DGUV V3: What you need to know
DGUV Regulation 3 (formerly BGV A3) stipulates that electrical installations and equipment must be inspected regularly. After each successful inspection, the equipment must be marked with an inspection label. In this guide, we explain what is important to know about inspection labels.
What is DGUV Regulation 3?
DGUV V3 is an accident prevention regulation issued by the German Social Accident Insurance. It requires employers to have all electrical installations and equipment inspected regularly by a qualified electrician. The aim is to protect employees from electrical hazards.
Inspection intervals at a glance
The following guidelines apply under normal operating conditions. The actual intervals are determined by a risk assessment carried out by the employer and may be shorter in the event of increased risk.
| Equipment / System | Guideline Inspection interval |
|---|---|
| Fixed electrical installations | 4 years (48 months) |
| Fixed equipment | 4 years (48 months) |
| Portable equipment (industrial/commercial) | 12 months |
| Portable equipment (office) | 24 months |
| Portable equipment (construction site) | 6 months |
| Equipment in special areas (e.g. damp rooms, rooms used for medical purposes) | 12 months |
Note: These guidelines are taken from DGUV Regulation 3 and the BetrSichV. The actual inspection intervals must always be determined on the basis of an individual risk assessment. If the error rate is below 2%, the intervals may be extended under certain circumstances.
Requirements for inspection labels
A standard-compliant inspection label should contain the following information:
- Inspection date (month and year of the last inspection)
- Next inspection date (month and year)
- Name or mark of the inspector
- Reference to the inspection basis (e.g. "Inspected in accordance with DGUV V3")
Inspection stickers vs. barcode inspection labels
Traditional inspection stickers are round labels with a ring for the year and month. The inspector marks the month and year of the next inspection by punching out or crossing out the relevant section. This makes it possible to see at a glance whether a device is still within its inspection period.
Barcode inspection labels go one step further: they combine the visual inspection marking with a scannable barcode. This allows inspection reports to be managed digitally and inspection histories to be documented seamlessly.
